Securing Kent Science Park: Advanced Perimeter Protection Expansion Project

We recently had the privilege of delivering a major security upgrade for Kent Science Park, one of the region’s leading research and business hubs. With the site expanding its boundaries, a new 3m high perimeter fence topped with razor wire was installed, complete with infrared CCTV coverage and a 24/7 manned security gatehouse.
Intelligent Fence Detection with OPTEX
Our role was to transform this physical barrier into a truly intelligent, proactive security system. Working alongside the main contractors, we partnered with OPTEX to integrate their market-leading fibre optic intrusion detection solution into the perimeter fence.
This cutting-edge system provides instant alerts to the gatehouse for any attempt at:
Cutting the fence
Climbing the fence
Tampering with the perimeter
By combining OPTEX’s technology with our installation expertise, the Science Park now benefits from a multi-layered defence that ensures rapid response to any potential security breach.
Advanced CCTV Installation
Alongside the fence detection, we also installed high-performance CCTV systems, including PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, giving the onsite security team complete visibility across the extended perimeter.
These cameras integrate seamlessly with the alarm system, so that any triggered alert is instantly verified through live video. This combination of detection + visual confirmation provides the gatehouse with the tools to respond effectively and without delay.
Collaboration with OPTEX
As one of our security engineers, Steve Poynton was closely involved in the installation and integration process. Reflecting on the project, Steve said:
